Just doing the fire fighting can be wearing. Spiritual nurture, through worship, prayer, creativity, study and companionship with others is necessary for me to endure the flames. Sometimes escape for awhile can be regenerative to energize a return to fire fighting.

I, like many others, have been attracted to the type of analysis taught by those who talk about stages of faith, dealing with death and grief or social change. I find myself in need to stop and ask what about this approach is culturally shaped. It is very Western to think this way in, as you mention, a linear fashion. Part of your encouragement to get beyond our traditional circles can be to wonder about the way we have been taught to think about information, analysis and belief. One of my favorite seminary classes at AMBS was Cultural Anthropology. Another discipline that has the potential to broaden our perspective.
